about

In the late 70’s the Amon Carter Museum of Fort Worth, Texas commissioned Richard Avedon to do a photographic project about the American west. The project, titled “In the American West,” still stands as a definitive expression of the power of photographic art, and offer an exceedingly powerful and graphically striking look at people. Each of the movements of In the American West, represents specific towns where Avedon photographed. In addition, the concept of composing a string quartet for banjo, violin, guitar, and bass comes from my experience in 2006 at the Banff Centre’s Jazz program with Dave Douglas. My arrangement of Astor Piazzolla’s intense tango also comes form my time in Banff. “The Rise” is named after the extraordinary geologic features in Sinks Canyon outside Lander, Wyoming where the Popo Agie River disappears into the limestone, and reappears about a mile downstream at The Rise. It also is at the locale of the National Outdoor Leadership School’s original headquarters. This album’s title “Ten Thousand Leaves” comes from the 7th century collection of Japanese poems of the same name.

about

Jake Schepps Boulder, Colorado

Jake Schepps has made a name for himself as a banjo renaissance man, an artist with not only an adroit touch on his instrument but an intrepid, imaginative vision for contemporary stringband music. Based in Boulder, Colorado, he leads the Jake Schepps Quintet, playing longform classical works written for string band, music by Bela Bartok, and of course some good ol' bluegrass. ... more
