about

This month’s release comes from the eclectic session last year with Enion (fiddle), Max Johnson (bass), and Ty Burhoe (tabla). We captured 4 tunes that day, one from Spain (November 2017), two from Brazil (June and October 2017), and this one from more northern climes. Hearing the Jan Johansen “Jazz på svenska” album rocked my musical world, offering traditional fiddle tunes played on piano and bass, with freely improvised directions in both folky and jazzy vibes. It was on high rotation for months, and when the idea of this session came about, I sought to capture one of my favorite tunes on the album.

As a bonus for subscribers, I’ve included an outtake banjo/fiddle solo. Music is recorded in all sorts of ways, and I will be posting more about this here over this year. Most music today is recorded with a computer program called ProTools. Musicians may choose to track the music in a linear fashion like the old days, yet all sorts of things can happen in the studio. We tracked this whole piece several times, and then at the end played several extra solos. What you are hearing is compiled from several takes, and the solo included on the track was my favorite. This second banjo/fiddle solo is a bit different, with one of the main problems being we did not hit the melody together very well at the end. There are also a few timing hiccups in the first 30 seconds. Yet I thought you dedicated and generous subscribers might like to peek behind the curtain and see how the sausage is made.
