Grant Gordy brought in this gem of a tune to the band around the time we were working on “Flatiron,” and we captured this in the studio at the same session as Marc Mellits’ piece and “The Oquirrh Ridge Drifter.” Grant composed the diminished scale lick that we all play at the end of the B-part. After 4 years, I remember well recording both this piece and “Drifter” as it was such a return to home base from working on “Flatiron.” After the very full week of rehearsals and the world premiere, playing some bluegrass and improvising, and not focusing on the written page, was a treat. You can hear it in our approach.

To still be playing music regularly with Enion and Eric with this Round Window project is a dream. It is rare to find a fiddler that can rip on a fiddle tune like this, then play demanding classical music parts, improvise in odd meters over jazz changes, and then willing to transcribe and memorize choro. She consistently kills it on all of this music, and I am spoiled getting to throw anything and everything at a musician such as Enion. And I have lauded Eric here before, and he never fails to make everyone he plays with sound better and feel good about their own playing. This is the real measure of a great musician, and ET is one of the best in the biz.
